WILL THE WORLD END?

Come the 21st of December, the earth will end- according to the doomsday prophets, that is. Their dire predictions are based on the calender used by the ancient Maya, which reaches the end of the long term cycle on the fateful day, but scientists know that these prophecies are widely inaccurate. If your looking for the Apocalypse, forget calenders- its meteor strikes, super volcanoes, hyper novas and pandemics that you should be worried about. First, lets look at the prediction of the ancient Maya.

A celebration for the Maya

the latest prediction for the end of the world-Dec.21,2012-stems from the ancient Maya Calender. Fantasists believe that the ancient Maya were predicting our demise on this date, but scientists maintain that the Maya would have viewed it as we do New Years Eve.

the Maya have a complex numerical system to be i track of dates, which they made an important calender. The calender began with the mythical creation of Aug. 11,3114 BC, and its longest cycle, the B'ak'tun, lasted for 144,000 days (just over 394 years). When our calender reaches Dec.12,13 of these long periods-some 5,125 years- would have passed.

To be continued...
