WILL THE WORLD END?

Come the 21st of December, the earth will end- according to the doomsday prophets, that is. Their dire predictions are based on the calender used by the ancient Maya, which reaches the end of the long term cycle on the fateful day, but scientists know that these prophecies are widely inaccurate. If your looking for the Apocalypse, forget calenders- its meteor strikes, super volcanoes, hyper novas and pandemics that you should be worried about. First, lets look at the prediction of the ancient Maya.

A celebration for the Maya

the latest prediction for the end of the world-Dec.21,2012-stems from the ancient Maya Calender. Fantasists believe that the ancient Maya were predicting our demise on this date, but scientists maintain that the Maya would have viewed it as we do New Years Eve.

the Maya have a complex numerical system to be i track of dates, which they made an important calender. The calender began with the mythical creation of Aug. 11,3114 BC, and its longest cycle, the B'ak'tun, lasted for 144,000 days (just over 394 years). When our calender reaches Dec.12,13 of these long periods-some 5,125 years- would have passed.

To be continued...

If you want to know how really did the ancient Maya predict the end of our world. Please read the next article.

THE ATOM

Continued...

... so, in logic that means that each atom has its own mass. So this is the very basics of an atom and the things inside the atom are called sub-atomic particles. So the nucleus is made out of protons and neutrons, that is why these are called nucleons(because they are in the nucleus). If you add the number of neutrons and protons in an atom, you get the total mass of the atom. What about the electrons? Well, before i explain that i have to explain about this.

Well, some people might think that the electron orbits around the nucleus just like the earth orbits the sun. This is a very old idea that the electrons orbit the nucleus but this idea is completely wrong. No one has ever proven whether they do orbit or stay rigid but for now, think that they are just teleporting and moving at the speed of light.

That is why electrons have no mass, because the move at the speed of light .

This is the the basics of an atom. But there is more to it. Read my other articles to find out

THE ATOM

Imagine that you had a pure gold ring. Divide it into half again and again and again until you reach a small piece which can be only seen in a microscope. Still divide in half until you reach the smallest piece of gold possible, this is an atom. If you divide the atom, it will no longer be gold.

You can fit a million of these atom on the tip of a needle!,they are very small and are too small to see by the human eye. The only way to see them is to is to look through a special microscope more advanced than the normal microscopes called the electron microscope(until someone has a better way to see them).

Everything in the world is made out of atoms, so far scientists have found only 115 different kind of atom  . These different types of atom which are each unique(has its own weight, size etc.) are called elements.

Parts of an atom

So what is an a atom. Well, in the center of the atom is the nucleus.  It is made out protons and neutrons.Around the nucleus are electrons. they surround the nucleus. The 115 kinds of atoms are different from each other because they have different numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons....

to be cont..

So this the very basics of a part in Physics called Quantum Mechanics(or quantum physics).

If you want to know more about the atom like the periodic table, orbitals, quarks, elements, mixtures and more of the world around and interesting facts  about the world around you, then read my articles(they may come each week or fortnight but it depends). And if you want to know more about the protons, neutrons and electrons and more. Please read the next article about it.
